Would be nice to mention the friends just by first 3 letters (minimum). For example, you type @mel, and the mod is searching for all friends, starting with those letters. If it finds one - it replaces the short version with full, and also working as a mentioin for this user. If there is 2+ users which names starting with those letters, then don't do anything, and send raw text, so a user, who is typing, will see, it wasn't able to mention anyone. On exact match, i mean in case, if there is User, and User1, @user should mention the first one.
This tricky way of "autocompletion" should help with mentioning users with long nicknames.
As for cherry on the cake, if the name would get converted to UserXXXX for other users on chat, that would be the great, and clear for everyone (who don't know the name, or has another name set for that user)

Honestly, I'd much rather just do tab completion through all users currently known online including friends (was planned) :) This'd somewhat meet your request I think too?
