I believe this could be done with the dateplot PGFPlots library (section 4.21.2 of v1.15 of the manual).

It would be useful enough to me that I would be interested in trying, but I don't have a ton of time, and the only way I interact with this package is through Plots.jl, so I'm very unfamiliar with the code here.

Ah, okay. If you want to take a crack at it and let me know if you'd rather have me or one of my students try it. I don't think it's hard.

Before I filed this issue I tried digging in a little and got essentially nowhere, so if you or your students have the bandwidth and will I say go for it -- it would be a very nice feature to have.
