If you just want to zoom without clipping happening, try ctrl+middle-mouse-drag. Otherwise, the Camera node has a property to set the near field plane offset directly. |
Near option seems to affect fov/perspective distortion not clipping. Changing camera to orthographic kind of works as a workaround though. v. 8.0.1 |
Well, for me if I ctrl+middle-click-drag up and down it zooms in and out without parts of the mesh getting clipped. It does change the perspective, but not so much that it hinders editing. |
Yes, it does seem to, a bit awkward to use with the mouse I have though(would prefer scroll-wheel for this. Any way to change that key-config)? So this issue can probably be closed then. |

It's really difficult to model anything to scale below a certain threshold whan all you see is the back side of the model:
Understandably its impossible to create defaults that would work for every single case so having adjustable settings for the viewport would be appreciated.
