If possible it would be great to have the API "guide" the user through shimming.

In doing this, the API should make it impossible to supply an invalid replacement method. Ideally, we could have the compiler verify the replacement method.

Please note, though, that this issue is not a showstopper for releasing v2.1 (once we get async/await working).

I'm moving this to v2.2 as I don't want to delay releasing support for async any more than absolutely necessary.

UPDATE 2024-06-06: I've removed this from any milestone for now.
