Magic Wand

An idea from Kenton Ross: Use filtering, segmentation algorithm(s) to create a "magic wand" selector. When the user touches a region-of-interest on the plot, the wand expands the boundaries of a polygon to the edges of the region. The sensitivity level of the selection tool could be set to some default threshold that the user could later adjust.
