After installing the new Edge browser, I'm getting two shortcuts and can't find a way to get rid of the old one:

Edge x2

Clicking on the 'old' one (distinguished by the previous Edge icon) opens the new Edge. On the Windows Start Menu, only the new shortcut appears.

Disabling "Search Metro Apps" is the only way I found to make it disappear from Open-Shell Menu. Any ideas? Thanks.

Go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and remove any old Microsoft Edge shortcuts.

This worked for me for the fluent start menu, I don't know if its going to work for OpenShell.

I found the 3 shortcuts below, they all have the new icon:

  1. C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Edge.lnk
  2. C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\Microsoft Edge.lnk
  3. C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\ImplicitAppShortcuts\188f5ec9d11ded56\Microsoft Edge.lnk

Removing 2 and 3 does nothing. Removing 1, removes the new shortcut. The old one remains. I think the old shortcut is a remnant of the previous "Metro" Edge that Open-Shell still picks up. I'm not even sure if Microsoft completely removes the old Edge from the system (yet?).

1 - Weird. Because I remember once, I was able to remove the UWP application shortcuts.

2 - No, they don't. Probably because of backwards compatibility.

But you could try uninstalling the old Microsoft Edge through Powershell Get-AppxPackage and Remove-AppxPackage commands which in theory should get rid of the shortcuts in the start menu.

I will not explain it to you how to do it, it requires a lot of time to do but you can always Google.

Try to clear caches:

  • Open Open-Shell settings
  • Click on Backup button
  • Pick Clear cached information

This is for anyone is looking to remove the Edge Browser App...

Microsoft Edge is a built-in app that cannot be removed in the same manner as we normally remove software.

The following link should be helpful in uninstalling/removing Edge on Windows 10.

Good Luck!

Clearing caches didn't help. "Open File location" on the old shortcut, opens an "Applications" File Explorer window which contains both... Edges. Not much can be done there.

I'm not sure trying to remove Edge will accomplish anything, since the new Edge is already installed and as far as Windows is concerned (and Microsoft I guess) the old Edge is gone and cannot be opened. I still don't know whether it remains on the system or not.

The problem is not really the "phantom" old Edge, but its shortcut which is only visible to Open-Shell Menu - unless "Search Metro Apps" is disabled, but access to all apps will be lost.

Anyway, it's mostly a cosmetic issue and a Microsoft mess-up possibly, unrelated to Open-Shell. Perhaps a way to remove the shortcut will emerge, or MS themselves might do so in an update. I don't want to experiment with risky Edge removal methods, especially since that Edge has already been "removed" by the new Edge. In theory, at least.

Correction: I didn't use "Open file location" on the old Edge shortcut because the option is not available. Only a limited context-menu appears, with the "Explore" option.

Right-clicking on the new Edge shortcut provides the usual, fully-fledged context menu.

It is possible to list UWP application shortcuts if you enter shell:appsFolder inside the windows explorer.
Though you cannot remove any items from there, maybe there is a way of doing that using registry.

was just coming to post this. upon installation of the new edge microsoft did away with the old UWP version. In the standard start menu this is reflected, using open-shell it is not.

on my way out the door to head to the gym but when i get back going to peruse through the potential workarounds listed in this thread and hope for the best. If not, i'll hope for the next version to implement a fix instead.

leave it to M$ sigh. Now we have all these dch drivers, uwp apps etc, and theyre removing their own applications from UWP and allowing x86 stuff on the M$ store now etc.

i see lots of transitioning back from dch to standard drivers in my future. I assumed we were headed in the direction of all dch but now i wonder. Thats what i get for being pre-emptive. Digressing.

I gave it a quick once over. I dont want to powershell it out of there and it is removed/hidden as far as microsoft is concerned. Id venture to say its an issue that needs addressing by open-shell contributors.

perhaps a means to choose what shortcuts are displayed in the apps list? expand on that functionality as opposed to simply coding edge out of there?

although the latter would be fine as well as i imagine it would be easier to simply omit edge from parsing into the apps menu if a version is installed in programfiles, or newer than xxx or whatever means of information is to be used as the flag.

either way, kind of screwed now. While the old edge shortcut will open the new edge, it displays the old icon, and having it under uwp apps when it no longer is irritates to a large degree if nothing else.

Closing this. Microsoft announced they'll be uninstalling Microsoft Edge Legacy starting April 2021. Hopefully the shortcut will go, too.

Reggie521 commented Apr 14, 2021

This issue hasn't been resolved. The April 2021 cumulative update that is supposed to remove legacy Edge leaves the second shortcut in the Applications folder (now with a blank icon), and a folder still installed in C:\Windows\SystemApps\ Neither can be removed and uninstalling via Powershell isn't possible.

Oh, great... I'll have to check whether a clean install is needed to not have that shortcut appear ever again.

It looks like it’s still here on the latest insider builds as well, even though they removed Edge completely. I’ll do a clean install on a dev build and see if it’s still there.

@klepp0906

anyone ever find a way to be rid of this?

@bonzibudd

@klepp0906 not yet. I tried on a clean install, and it was still there. Before they officially removed it, the icon was still the old one, now it's just blank:

It seems that MS kept the old one hidden away for some reason, maybe compatibility, but it still appears to the user in some cases.

@bonzibudd

Well, I tried it on another new machine and it looks like this:

So that's an improvement, I guess. It still opens up the Chromium browser.

I wonder if this shortcut has any special property that hides it from the Windows Start Menu. Did they actually do something to hide it specifically (while not caring for other Start Menus), or is it some sort of bug they forgot to clean up? Frankly it looks like the latter as is often the case with W10, but I wouldn't know.

does culling it out with the wim tweak effect anything under the hood? no idea how it operates but I dont want to break anything considering i intend to use this windows install to upgrade to 11 when the time comes.

well yea, the batch calls the wim tweak. just trying to ascertain what it changes specifically and if there were any way to reverse it if necessary.

using that batch ditched the broken shortcut but still kept the new chromium based edge for you?

Basically after it removed the version installed it will be the old legacy version. I than simply installed the actual Microsoft Edge download for Windows 10. I got my icon back that way properly.

@blackcrack

@molitar .. so, it is not an Open Shell Issue.. ?

@klepp0906

it is, the icon is gone with other start menus including the native. no idea where open-shell is parsing it from that others arent though.

well, i guess more, to be Open-Shell only list Icons, where exist.. and now, where you de-install the old legacy version Edge is, like i have read, disappear the 2 icons and where install an actual Edge, is only one icon... ..

Edge x2

and if you look the picture from the first Posting is one the IExplorer Icon and the other the Edge Icon, so maybe the one IE-Icon is the Edge in IExplorer mode .. because the Open Shell only listing what's exist, because this, it is not a Open Shell Issue, it's a Microsoft-listing, because, i can bet with more as 10 000 $ to be only listing what's exist, nothing else.. and therewith it is NOT an OpenShell Issue .. comprende Campaniero, si ? *smile* 😄

this is what i get when searching "edge"

image

and this is my apps folder

image

about to install open-shell in a new vm and see if it parses the old/blank icon. also going to have to succumb to the wim_tweak fix it appears. Just gonna create an image prior so i can roll back if need be i guess.

EDIT: Brand new/naked fully updated windows 10 VM. Installed latest open-shell

image

ah, going back over this thread (its old lol) most of this stuff is a rehash. either way, just finished running the uninstall edge script on the vm, it did remove it and it left the chrome based edge unscathed.

my question then becomes why is this necessary with open-shell and what does it affect or potentially affect down the line if anything by brute forcing the icon out of a 3rd party start menu. trying to ascertain if this is going to return to bite in the ass down the road if i do it on the main box.

Same since I went to Open-Shell did not have the problem in Classic Shell.

@bonzibudd

@molitar the issue appears the same for me in Classic Shell:

image

There could be another factor that could change if the icon is or isn't shown.

@molitar

molitar commented Jul 18, 2021

Than I wonder if it's the build of Windows 10. I been running Build 1909 for the longest time and it just updated to 20H2. So the cached image may have been working properly for Classic Shell and than when I updated to Open-Shell it probably lost it's cache.

@bonzibudd

Yeah, that seems about right. MS pushed a KB update to several versions of Win10 to "replace" Edge with the new version, but it seems to have left some remnants for apps that just display the shortcut as it is.

@blackcrack
Copy link

@bonzibudd because it is not an Issue from Open Shell and normally can be close, @Gittyperson

@klepp0906
Copy link

so what your saying is the reason openshell picks it up and not start10 and not the default startmenu is because microsoft chooses to have it show in classic/open-shell but not the others?

irrespective of where the fault lay, open shells developers know what information is parsed to generate the list, id like to think coding out that unsightful entry would be relatively easy.

i guess some people are bothered more by it than contributors are.

in the name of fairness, with windows 11 on the horizon i imagine bigger problems are about to rear their head though ;p

@Gittyperson

I'm leaving it open since the issue is still present, even if a minor one. The Open-Shell guys can close it any time. I'm not blaming anyone, and certainly not Open-Shell since I don't know why this shortcut still appears.

As mentioned, it does not appear on the native Start Menu. I haven't tested, but klepp0906 also mentioned earlier that it does not appear on other Start Menus.

@klepp0906
Copy link

yea im not trying to be combative over it since its only a polish/aesthetic issue. i dont care where the fault lay and it may resolve itself come windows 11 anyhow. i just know it personally bothers me enough to consider using the wim tweak to purge it which i consider the nuclear option.

with limited research wim_tweak.exe seems to remove the owner regs from the install.wim\windows\system32\config\system hive. whatever ms left there I have to err on the side of caution and assume may have been left for a reason. I dont format windows, havent since 2016 and dont intend to with 11, so i dont want to risk mucking something up and permissions can get real messy real fast.

@blackcrack

blackcrack commented Jul 19, 2021

@Gittyperson and @klepp0906 so it is not an Issue from OpenShell and hangs imho only bad around like a dead deer in the Issues.. it is exist enough issues where should resolved and have imho really more reasons why should be open and this community should look to work together, because not OpenShell issues should be closed, if Open Shell is close to your heart, so please close this issue .. to have a issue less where hanging around ..

@Gittyperson

@blackcrack that's the third time you've said that: one more reason for me NOT to close it so please stop repeating yourself. For the last time, it is still not entirely clear (not to me, anyway) whether this minor issue is exclusive to Open-Shell or not.

fwiw i recently checked out some alternatives, start11 and startisback

while they both have their pro's n cons, i find open-shell superior and is preferred.

just wanted to note that while start11 also parses the broken microsoft edge shortcut (ugh) startisback does not. So if any developer/contributor here cares to drop a line to the startisback developer to find out how he's omitting that monstrosity ;p

i don't think it's open shell menu bug, instead they are 2 different applications.
also, old edge was removed from windows. so i think this issue can be closed.
@coddec @ge0rdi

@klepp0906

it depends how you classify bug. edge being removed from windows yet STILL parsing a blank icon IS the "bug" or perhaps this can be classified as an "improvement" instead.

some third party start menu's are picking it up alongside the windows apps still, some are not. The idea is to have this behave similar to the 3rd party start menu's that are omitting that god awful eyesore.

its either happening due to parsing method, or its simply being blacklisted via the 3rd party start menu's that dont display it.

@Gittyperson

This is not about Edge legacy. It is about its shortcut. Also, it seems Edge legacy is still in Windows 10. Only access to it has been removed.
