This is useful because a lot of people use trezor web-wallet. Blockbook is the back-end explorer for trezor wallet which people connect their web wallet to. It's a big privacy risk and if Trezor servers get compromised it could be a massive problem. Also, if there is a fork of Bitcoin, some users may want to run a type of node that Trezor doesn't support.
Finally I believe that the reason trezor doesnt support a higher gap limit on the web wallet (which is really annoying!) is because they don't want too much data on their web servers.
