Currently it is impossible to see or find an image on the website unless you are specifically searching for it.

How about adding a section in the website for photos (similar to how other departments have: science arts etc.) However, give it a different formatting and introduce image collections to group similar photos. I am imagining a format similar to a photos app and collections embedded within that stream that encompass multiple photos.
