As first noticed by @taukakao and confirmed by me too, the GNOME Xorg session is broken currently and it seems to be the case since last month too (I verified the issue on my oldest image VM last updated on 21/6/24).
I believe this regression might be introduced after we updated GNOME Shell to 46. (cc @jardon)
This seems to be the case in VMs only (there are examples in the issue that jardon linked). I'm not sure it should have priority since the default is Wayland and it works pretty well in VM (in my tests at least).
