The issue boils down to lack of Unicode normalization from the openstreetmap-website. This is an API bug that will be resolved with OpenStreetMap-NG project. I prefer to fix issues at their core and patching up just osm-revert does not seem like a feasible solution to me. The issue will sooner or later also affect other apps.
