Serendipity ran into me today and I found this MRMS archive covering the 2001-2011 period. This could potentially be used for DEP.

There's some collaborator interest in this dataset, so away we go to make it possible to use. Steps to do:

  • save the individual files into the mtarchive trees like so.
  • add support for downloading these via the pyIEM helper.
  • create an IEM archive of a5m rasters with the same ramp as the a2m files 🏃‍♀️
  • update the IEM daily mrms netcdf 🏃‍♀️
  • use these as the input source for dep's daily climate file editor for at least the 2007-2011 period

  • A problem was found with nearly all 23 Z hour 2001 data missing. Emailed author to see if this is a known issue.

Will investigate, maybe.

So a crude data quality assessment found the MRMS precip totals to have the same about 5-20% positive bias versus other datasets, like PRISM. For DEP, this isn't a huge concern as the MRMS data is just used for intensity partitioning of the higher quality datasets (read stage IV for realtime). For other projects that may directly use this data, 🤷 . Not having the gauge correction of bias is going to hurt, I believe.
