Goofy marks messages as read with window out-of-focus

Given that Goofy is running in the background as the non-active window,
When a new message is received:

• it will display the notification jewel / number on the icon eg '(1)' for a few seconds
• that number will then go away, and the message will be marked as read

It's quite problematic as read receipts get sent, and I might notice 10 minutes, an hour, a day later that someone had replied to me.
