I initially planned to write a serious and lengthy explanation, but I figured it might be too hard to read, so here’s a brief summary:
What happened?
On December 3, 2024, the President of South Korea declared martial law and deployed the military to major public institutions, including the National Assembly. However, the operation ended within two hours after the troops merely broke a few windows.
There was no actual crisis; the President Yoon simply wanted to flaunt the extent of their authority.
This absurd misuse of military power led both the armed forces and the public to reject the President’s actions. Citizens resisted by blocking armored vehicles, giving lawmakers the time needed to vote and annul the martial law declaration.
To be precise, the issue lies with the President's spouse. She comes from a wealthy family known for their influence in the entertainment and alcohol industries and was a financial supporter of President Yoon during his time as a public official (prosecutor).
Currently, she is under suspicion for involvement in large-scale stock manipulation and is also accused of receiving a Dior clutch bag as a bribe.
How Does This Affect the WelsonJS Project?
It has no impact whatsoever. South Korea is a country where criticizing and satirizing the President is freely allowed.
We’re just tired of having a President who treats running the country like a board game. Hopefully, he steps down sooner rather than later.
