Yes, with a scope. I was thinking a simple set to a track and continuously read (keep the head loaded) so you can tweak the stepper while monitoring.
Also - I saw it is not always easy to see an eye pattern when adjusting an 8" drive after replacing the stepper. I don't know enough down at the low level reading if this can help. A decode of the known bytes/fields such as sync bytes and giving a count or some means to know the quality of the decoding? Assuming IBM FM or MFM encoding as a start
