Upgrade-system job gets stuck

Description

In my cluster the system-upgrade job gets stuck on nodes. Probably during node drain. I have to use --force and delete a longhorn instance-manager pod manually. Then I have to delete the system-upgrade job and the jobs pod. Only then the job restarts and finishes successfully.
This happens for nodes which have strict node local volumes attached.

I still get stuck upgrades. I don't think that they are caused by longhorn anymore (that part is solved). Now I have problems with cloud native Postgres operator, which might get stuck if not stoppend gracefully: cloudnative-pg/cloudnative-pg#2842
In the k3s upgrade agent plan I see a drain:-force. That could cause trouble with cnpg. The other thing are os updates and node reboots. How is this handled? Is the node, that will be updated, drained gracefully or forced?

It's handled by kured. drain/eviction of pods and reboot, until everything is done it won't reboot.

I tested a kured reboot of the Postgres primary node. The reboot wasn't stuck and the Postgres failover worked. I will test some more times in the next days to be confident that os related drains and reboots do not cause problems. I still suspect, that the k3s-upgrade plan with the drain:--force setting caused the problem.

@HendrikLevering You can try setting the new system_upgrade_enable_eviction=false flag (#1338). This should evict the pods even if they have a PDB.

@mysticaltech Given the heavy use of longhorn here and the fact that its PDB prevents system-upgrade-controller from working currently (as longhorn-manager won't be evicted unless all replicas have been moved from the node (which again is not possible/working the way system-upgrade-controller is initializing the drain process), I was wondering if system_upgrade_enable_eviction=false should be made the default?

In addition:

• spotting the upgrade job failing is pretty hard if you are not super familiar with system-upgrade-controller as the job is executed only once for 20 mins. Unless you know that you need to search for failed jobs in NS system-upgrade, you likely wait forever and wonder why the cluster is not upgraded.

• Most users making use of longhorn don't use more nodes than needed, i.e. there won't be X standby nodes available that can take all replicas of a specific node (which would be required for longhorn-manager to be evicted AFAICS). Not having a full standy node is not an issue because if there are 3 replicas on 3 nodes, loosing one node in a hard way isn't causing any issues. Yes, there are some dangerous settings within longhorn that one can set to allow evicting longhorn-manager pods without healthy/sufficient replicas, but if this is enabled, the risk is high that at some point all pods are evicted without a healthy replica left, leading to faulty volumes). Given the nodes are not removed during this action also means all replicas will stay on the local volume and will just be rediscovered one longhorn-manager is running again.

ATM all of my clusters are already on latest stable (1.30.6) as I used a different manual variant to workaround the issue. But maybe somebody else still on 1.30.5 can report if that actually works - maybe @HendrikLevering or @Talinx?

Our cluster is running version 1.29.10. I run an up-to-date CNPG DB-cluster with node local volumes and node-drain-policy with value allow-if-replica-is-stopped. This setup is running stable for 2 month now. The cluster is updating the nodes flawlessly. No stuck jobs anymore.

If you're still on 1.29.10 then you're either not following the "stable" (1.30.6 right now) k3s channel (is initial_k3s_channel set to 1.29?) or your upgrade jobs don't work.

You can check if there are any failed ones with kubectl get job -n system-upgrade.
