The need

Currently, anvi-setup-ncbi-cogs supports COG databases up to COG20. However, the latest version of the COG database is COG24, which includes updated and more comprehensive functional annotations. Integrating COG24 into Anvi'o would significantly enhance the quality of functional annotation and downstream analyses.😊

The solution

Allow users to run:
anvi-setup-ncbi-cogs --cog-version COG24
Successfully download and integrate the COG24 database into Anvi'o.

I just realized this new release of COGs is missing a critical file, cog-24.fa.gz, which is described in the previous release of COGs with the following line:

Gzipped FASTA file, containing sequences from all COGs

I'm sure it is easy to add in, but I am not sure who to write to at the NCBI to ask for help. Does anyone have any idea who would be the best contact person for this inquiry?

Never mind. I found this page, and I will go from there: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/research/cog
