- spray 3, 9-inch round pans

- 2 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 stick butter
- 1 teaspoon egg-yokes
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 cups flour
- 5 egg-yokes
- 5 egg-whites
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1 can flake coconut
Cream sugar, butter, Crisco and yokes one at a time. Add baking soda to buttermilk and add to sugar mixture alternating with flour. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites and vanilla. Add nuts and coconuts. Pour into 2, 9-inch sprayed pans. Bake at 325° for 20 to 40 minutes. Cool 10 min in pans then turn onto wire racks and cool completely before frosting. Use a cream cheese frosting.
