Notice anything? This newsletter looks different – + so fresh, so clean. There's even a monthly quiz about Africa from + Matthew, and I'm glad I nailed the first question. + Try your luck at the bottom of this email. +

This month, I've got five updates plus some crazy stats, news across the globe, and + something I promised you last month: a link to my + + TEDxTalk. +

 + + + +

 1. UBI paradox +

The idea of giving + free money to everyone + appeals to progressives and conservatives alike – and of course myself as firm believer in UBI. Why + else would I be writing to you every month? Even Google is now + financing a five-year UBI program + for recently homeless families in San Francisco. +

Clicking a Google ad seems a bit less painful now. +

 + + + +

 2. Cash is king +

Cash transfers not only help lift people out of poverty in Sierra Leone but are also + crucial for emergency relief around the world. Countries with + strong digital infrastructure can quickly and accurately deliver aid, ensuring it + reaches those in need + during crises. +

Former UN Chief + Ban Ki-Moon has called + for cash to be “the preferred and default method of support” for + humanitarian organizations. Word. +

 + + + +

 3. Acts of kindness +

Sometimes accepting a gift can be harder than giving one. + How would you feel if someone paid for your groceries? According + to New York Times columnist The Ethicist, the greatest gift is often + accepting a gift graciously. +

Now, let's talk about giving—how about + donating $5 + to Ebola survivors? More than 800 people did already. +

 + + + +

 4. Pack your bags +

I came across a travel agency with the slogan: + "Visit Sierra Leone before everyone else does." They have a point. + Before you make vacation plans, how about joining me and the team on our next trip in April 2025? + We would love to have you with us. +

You have 10 months to pack your bags, so + no excuses! +

 + + + +

 5. Do I rely on AI? +

Absolutely! This very line was proofread by chatty 🤖, but + I don't trust it completely so thanks to our friend Han for always + doing a final review. Similarly, you might assume that scientists depend on their + own reasoning as a measure of sound logic, but + pivotal research shows that this + idea is outdated. +

Only attentive humans understand the joke in the last sentence. +

 My World in Data +

 500 billion +

Wealthy countries owe + this amount in moral debt + to poorer nations, according to + Nobel-winning economist Esther Duflo. She suggests funding this + through a global minimum corporate tax and with wealth taxes. +

The next question is how to disperse the funds, with some + advocating + direct payments to people. +

 + + + +

 15 billion +

NASA engineers have just restored + Voyager 1’s data transmission, even though the spacecraft is 15 billion miles away and + was launched in the 1970s. +

If this doesn't prove that even the most distant problems can be + solved, then what does? +

 + + + +

 2 billion +

That's how many people are heading to the polls this year across + 50 countries to elect their government. Artificial + intelligence-generated content is now widely being used to spread misinformation and to confuse or + entertain voters. +

 Lazy millionaires +

Have friends who claim that giving “free money” + makes people lazy? Spoiler alert: + it doesn’t. Ask them if they’re also against inheritance, or if they want + it taxed at 100%. After all, we don’t want lazy millionaires, do we? +

Speaking of money, here’s how Warren Buffet + performs a mic test. +

 Ikigai effect +

 + + +

Ikigai is + a Japanese concept that entails finding a passion that + gives your life value and joy? I might be late to the party, but + this nifty illustration by + Jun Han Chin + helped make sense of what I'm doing. +

Volunteering for Social Income is definitely core to my ikigai. +

 + + + +

 Silver linings +

The opposite of ikigai is probably social media—a black hole draining life's meaning. + The silver lining is that good things can still emerge, like our successful + campaign with ismatu, which generated $30,000 for Ebola survivors. Our friends at GiveDirectly also teamed up with the + influencer MrBeast, the most-followed YouTuber. + The message + of empowering direct cash transfers resonates deeply. +

 Charming UBI +

My friend asked me how I would persuade her notoriously + suspicious mother about the benefits of UBI. I initially started + to tick off the effects, efficiency and research, but then remembered that + Rutger Bregman explains this super eloquently in his + TED Talk. +

 Mothers like him anyway. +

 + + + +

 Human triumph +

We all know that AI regularly gets called out for + cheating. The photographer Miles Astray entered a + real image + of a flamingo 🦩 to an AI-generated image contest and won. Of course + he was disqualified, but the point was made regardless: +

Human made things are still good. +

 + + + +

 Frozen funds +

It feels like choosing a Netflix movie—endless debates, and in the end, + everyone is mad. The Loss and Damage Fund of the United Nations is + similarly at a loss, with + no clear plan + how to distribute money. +

Many believe cash transfers are the best way to help those + impacted by climate change by ensuring aid reaches those in need. This is why we support people in + Freetown, the third most impacted city in the world. +

Keep waiting for the United Nations, or + take action now. +

The rollout of ChatGPT prompted persistent fears of AI replacing human jobs. Sam Altman, founder of + Open AI and + chief cheerleader of the boom in artificial intelligence, recently voiced his view on + how we can achieve social justice in a world in which this occurs. +

One in four women worldwide will experience at least one incident + of sexual violence in her lifetime (WHO). + Ghosts are strange artifacts that result from flawed training data or algorithms. One + haunting example + is the absence of representation. + Armut bekämpfen. Wenn nicht wir, wer? +

 Hallo {{first_name}} +

+ Quelle + Welt Bank +

Taking action against poverty. If not us,who? +

 Hi {{ insert first_name 'default=there' }}, +

Should we help people in poverty? Here are a few personal reasons: +

    +
  1. + Born lucky: + I had a head start in life that many others don’t, simply by being from Switzerland. +
  2. +
  3. + Dare to care: + Simply being aware of global poverty doesn’t actually help anyone escape it. +
  4. +
  5. + Now, not later: + We often find excuses to avoid taking action because inaction is easier. Let's change that. +
  6. +
  7. + Self-fulfillment: + The act of helping others unexpectedly brings joy into one's own life. +
  8. +

In short: Let's not + leave people out in the rain + if we have the means. +

 + + +
 + + + +

How did I get involved? +

I began in January 2021 by donating $33 per month – 1% of my internship salary at the Swiss + government. As my salary increased, my contributions grew. +

Think my donation is insignificant? + Think again. In a country with an average monthly income of $40, this makes a + substantial difference. + Source + World Bank +

Agir contre la pauvreté. Qui le fera, sinon nous? +

 Bonjour {{first_name}}, +

 + + +
 + + + +

Comment je me suis engagée? +

+ Source + banque mondiale +

Good to know: + This site + tracks AI use in elections. +
