One area in which I know the existing docs are lacking is the development docs and specifically, creating and maintaining extensions.

I'm going to adapt existing docs, or write new stuff when necessary, to cover:

  • Installing/updating extensions (for the Getting Started category)
  • Developing extensions, including:
    • Delegates
    • Coding style/guidelines
    • extension.meta.xml and SymphonyExtensions.com

Going forward, I'd also like to document some of the core extensions, as well as some of the common extensions that are nearly essential or very useful—e.g., Associations. But we can look at that a bit later.

I am not intending to do anything related to hacking on the core of Symphony at the moment, beyond perhaps throwing up placeholder pages in the appropriate sections.

Let me know if you think anything else extension-related is lacking or should be addressed!

Suggestion, for the record.

A friend of mine always ask me (more than once, the same question) how to send emails through a form. These kind of questions have more than one answer, but the current best answer is doing with Email Template Manager extension. From time to time, extensions get better, change or became obsole. Would be nice to have tutorials guiding the best practices to accomplish casual stuff using extensions. This may also encourage extension makers to post a tutorial here about their extension, remembering on choose good titles (for instance, the goal here in not how to use the extension, is how to send email).
