Connection Timeout / Max. Retries Exceeded when pairing by IP

Expected Behaviour:
User should be informed that a connection to the host with the entered IP address is not possible.

Actual Behaviour:
Fails more or less silently, just stating that an exception has occurred / logged.

If anyone reading this experienced this issue and can give some more details about why / under which circumstances this happens (i.e. if the IP address was entered properly, GFE is set up properly, etc), I'd appreciate the input as there might very well be a bug in communicating with GFE.
