Podman issues with custom Chainguard image.

Good day all,
I am having troubles figuring out how to build a working Podman image using Chainguard images. I have been at this for a few days now but no dice.
Currently I have a Dockerfile that is using a custom image that has gcc-glibc installed as well as a shell and apk. After following some instructions Ive found, I continuously run into this error after execing into the container

podman pull debian:latest
WARN[0000] "/" is not a shared mount, this could cause issues or missing mounts with rootless containers 
cannot clone: Invalid argument
Error: cannot re-exec process

If I apk add mount and run mount --make-rshared / i get

mount: /: permission denied.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.

I am trying to set this up to run as rootless but even running as root produces the same error.
We are not tied to this custom image. The base Wolfi would work fine if that would make this easier.
I am new to Wolfi/Chainguard so possible i am missing something, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if you need more info.
