how to use alternative taxonomies?

#733 introduced an option to select a term from the euroscivoc vocabulary, but it seems to have removed the option to insert subjects from arbitrary vocabularies. Are there alternative mechanisms to introduce subjects from alternative vocabularies, such as agrovoc, wikidata, gemet?

the change seems somehow related to the introduction of domain specific fields in recent releases. I wonder if the way forward here would be to work with you on a set of domain properties for the soil/environment domain?
