Storymap Workshop

This is a workshop for the California Map Society fall meeting 2017 at UCLA. This workshop provides an overview of how to create a storymap.

1. What's a storymap? (10 min)

  • The basic elements for a good storymap

2. Now how can we digitize scanned maps? (10 min)

  • Georeferencing basics
  • Using Georeferencer

3. So where can we store them? (10 min)

  • Storing georeferenced maps online
  • Using Mapbox to host georeferenced images

4. I have some data I want to add as layer (15 min)

  • Creating a thematic map
  • Using Carto to create a map with points.
  • Adding a georeferenced map from Mapbox to enrich and provide context to the points.

5. So let's tell a story...(30 min)

  • Storymap basics
  • Using storymapJS to tell a narrative point to point. (15 min)
  • Using ArcGIS to tell a immersive narrative with additional features. (15 min)

6. What if I want to go back and add more media? (10 min)

7. Lets make maps! Rest of the time on your own. Make maps. Ask questions. Last 10 to 15 minutes share your maps!
