While VS2022 is in preview, i think this work should be conducted in a separate branch. |

Reading the migration guide, it looks like the extension should also be refactored to used a shared project. |

Although this might not be the right way forward in terms of multi-version support I can at least confirm it works for me. Massive help for my sanity - thanks. |
